Kulshreshtha et. al., in Oct 2008 Stated that Spirulina has unique blend of nutrients that no single source can offer. The food contains a wide spectrum of therapeutic nutrients that include B-complex vitamins, minerals, proteins, gamma-linolenic acid and the super anti-oxidants such as beta-carotene, vitamin E, trace elements and a number of unexplored bioactive compounds. Because of its apparent ability to stimulate whole human physiology, Spirulina exhibits therapeutic functions such as antioxidant, anti-bacterial, antiviral, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and anti-diabetic and the ability to increase in the quantity of blood. Spirulina consumption promotes the growth of intestinal micro flora as well.

Adverse Effects of Spirulina
Some people have reported minor symptoms after taking spirulina. These spirulina side effects include: l. Slight fever. This can be normal since the body needs to burn extra protein found in spirulina. 2. Slight dizziness and nausea. 3. Thirst and constipation. When taking spirulina, you should increase your water intake. At least half a liter of water should be drank for the body to absorb the spirulina herb well. 4. Stomach ache and other gastrointestinal symptoms.5. Slight body risk or skin itching
Danger of Spirulina
Spirulina poses no dangers when taken in the recommended dosage. Taking less than 50 grams per day should be relatively safe with no notable side effects. However, as in most dietary supplements, taking exceedingly large doses can cause unwanted spirulina side effects. Because of the high nucleic acid content of spirulina, it can give you increased levels of uric acid, which can consequently cause kidney problems. Due to the high content of vitamins and minerals, impaired liver function might also occur.
Spirulina: Nature's Super Food
The foods we eat are the first line of defense from the negative effects of lifestyle such as stress, pollution, radiation and toxic chemicals. Yet so many foods are nutritionally week. They leave us vulnerable to malnutrition inducing diseases and shorten our quality of life.
Spirulina is truly "nature's superfood." At up to 60% protein, its content far surpasses any other food. The protein content is not just a number; it is a complete protein, meaning it contains all the esential amino acids. The only food with more usable protein than Spirulina is eggs. While most proteins are high in fat, calories and chloresterol, Spirulina is quite opposite with only 5% fat content and less than 4 calories per gram |
- Anti-Cancer Effects

- Liver Fibrosis-Cirrhosis-Cancer
Anti-cancer Effects
Peer-reviewed clinical animal studies: Studies have shown that spirulina stops the formation of atheromas (plaques) in arteries (anti-atherogenic), lowers cholesterol LDL (anticholesterolemic), reduces inflammation, and has anti cancer effects, (Sano and Tanaka, 1987; Hasegawa et al., 2000). Spirulina has also been shown to induce apoptosis and prevent oxidative damage (Md Saad et al., 2006). The anti cancer effects were observed when 150mg of spirulina were consumed per pound of body weight. To follow this research one would need 30 grams of Spirulina per 200 lbs of body weight. The results of the study defined the chemopreventive role of spirulina by inhibiting cellular proliferation (decreasing Bcl-2 expression) and inducing apoptosis (increasing caspase 8 expression) in liver cancer cells. (Mohd Azamai et al. 2009).
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic progressive autoimmune disorder that affects about 1% of the general population worldwide, but will increase with the aging populations in USA and Europe. Allopathic Medicine treatments with steroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) has only limited success.
Such therapies are helpful in controlling the symptoms of acute rheumatoid arthritis, but their effects on chronic, prolonged rheumatoid arthritis are unsatisfactory and associated with various side effects.
Spirulina treatment successfully repaired rheumatoid arthritis with dosages of 800mg/kg or 400mg/per lb. These dosages produced significant anti-inflammatory effects by reducing swelling in rheumatoid arthritis. (Mahaboobkhan Rasool et. al., 2006)
Liver fibrosis Cirrhosis Cancer
Liver fibrosis is a chronic liver disease that will further develop to Cirrhosis then possibly into cancer. Liver fibrosis is commonly caused by alcoholism, hepatitis B and C, and fatty liver disease but has many other possible causes if severe damage continues to form.
Peer-reviewed clinical studies have demonstrated that antioxidants are able to inhibit the proliferation of hepatic stellate cell. Spirulina antioxidant activity has been investigated and demonstrated to inhibit the effect on the proliferation of hepatic stellate cell.
Results indicated:
Spirulina has antiproliferative effects on cancerous liver cells, fibrosis liver cells in human cancer cell lines. Spirulina induced organized cell death to liver fibrosis cells. In addition, Spirulina triggered a cell cycle arrest, that is to say before the liver cells were able to multiply, Spiruline stopped the production of addition fibrosis cells, e.g., hepatic stellate cell at the G2/M phase. (Li-chen Wu et. al., April 13, 2005)
How Spirulina compares to other foods:
* 300% more calcium than whole milk
* 2300% more iron than spinach
* 3900% more beta carotene than carrots
* 375% more protein than tofu
* 3 grams of Spirulina has more antioxidant & anti-inflammatory activity than five servings of vegetables
Spirulina is a high energy food that has a cleansing effect and improves digestion and elimination. It is a great supplement for people of all ages. It is especially good for the following individuals:
* Children who will not eat their vegetables
* Students away from home
* People who do not eat a consistent diet of nutritious foods
* Older people who have a problem with absorption and digestion
* People recovering from operations
* People coping with diseases such as cancer, AIDS/ HIV or any other virus that suppresses the immune system
Spirulina is Shown to Help With
Numerous Health Conditions
Spirulina has been shown to help with a number of conditions including the following: reduced ischemic brain damage, improved post-stroke locomotor activity, reduced both skin and stomach tumors, prevent fatty liver development and increase iron storage and hemoglobin blood counts. Under nourished children and adults have responded well to being fed spirulina. People who use BioAnue Spirulina have reported improvements in their energy level in as little as one day of using the product.
Nutritional support helps you become an active participant in your battle with cancer or any other immunological disease. With Spirulina you have the ability to:
* Fight fatigue
* Improve treatment outcomes by maximizing your immune response
* Prevent or correct nutritional imbalances and deficiencies
* Manage weight and maintain muscle tissue
Spirulina is best known as an immune booster, and this property has medical implications far beyond cancer prevention. In A Natural Physician's Healing Therapies, Mark Stengler, ND, writes, "Spirulina stimulates natural killer cells and similar anti-immune components of the immune system that can help fight cancer cells." Furthermore, these spirulina-stimulated killer cells can fight illnesses other than cancer, ranging from the common cold to HIV.
Scientists have been exploring spirulina's ability to treat cancer. Animal studies repeatedly show that spirulina hinders the growth of oral cancer. Moreover, Indian scientists conducted the first human study of spirulina-based cancer treatment in 1995. "[These scientists] reported a complete regression of pre-cancerous mouth lesions in 45 percent of subjects who were given extracts of spirulina for 12 months," wrote Earl Mindell, RPh, PhD, in Earl Mindell's Secret Remedies.
